About the Author
Dr Nairn has taught immunology to medical students since 1981, first at the University of Michigan Medical School and, since 1995, at Creighton University School of Medicine. He has participated in developing curricula and in school-wide curriculum revision, leading the biannual workshop on Teaching Microbiology and Immunology to Medical Students sponsored by the Association of Medical School M & I Chairs for the last six years.
Dr Nairn trained in the UK obtaining his PhD at the University of London and National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill, London. His research interests have included MHC antigen structure and function, antigen processing, cell activation in the inflammatory response etc. His laboratory has been funded by theNational Institute of Health, American Cancer Society etc, and he is the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles, chapters and reviews in immunology and related research areas. In addition to research in immunology, Dr Nairn hascollaborated in research studies in medical education, particularly with respect to case based learning.
Matthew Helbert is a Consultant Clinical Immunologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at St Bartholomew's Hospital London. He runs a primary immunodeficiency clinical service and so has regular contact with patients. In addition, he runs a diagnostic laboratory. He is involved in teaching to undergraduate medical students and in training specialist registrars. He has a special interest in immunological memory.

Lacking in detail

Immunology for Medical Students is a good overall resource but leaves you a little fuzzy about detail and scope. Overarching principles are presented clearly, but the text doesn't elaborate enough on important specifics such as VDJ recombination in lymphocytes and cytokine function. This text is insufficient for the current medical school course I am taking and wouldn't even have been adequate for the undergraduate immunology course I took a few years ago. Janeway's Immunobiology gives you a much better understanding of the topics, though it does probably go too far to the other side in providing detail.

This book saved my grade

This book saved my grade. My professor was using the Kuby book (written from a researcher's point of view) to teach our Immunology class. It made no sense to me.
Then I bought this book (written from a medical provider's point of view) and suddenly everything made sense. The material was exactly the same as we were studying in class, but simply explained better. I kept this book after the class because it's such an awesome reference. I also met Dr. Narin as he guest-lectured some of our classes. He's an awesome guy, and it's no wonder his book is so easy to understand.

An excellent immunology book for medical students

The book is concise and easy to follow. It contains a lot of background information, in format of inserted boxes, on diseases related to the immune system. The information about immunology is NOT thorough with details. Neither is the presentation of (immuno)pathology. But should be adequate for medical students.
