Stunning and compelling debut

"All That is Solid Melts In the Air" is a memorable, haunting read. It's the last years of the USSR, and the 1986 Chernobyl disaster forms the backdrop for a story that focuses on ordinary lives impacted by the disaster. I was a young teenager when this disaster occurred and remember discussing it for days on end with family members and friends. It was unimaginable, a nightmare come true, and even then, I sensed the frustrations of adults who felt the Soviet government was not being forthcoming about the true extent of the disaster.
The plot here revolves around several key characters: the young piano prodigy Yevgeni who is humiliated by his poverty; his aunt Maria, a dissident who chafes against her lowly job; the peasant child Artyom whose family has to endure the horror of the transit camps after the disaster; and, Maria's surgeon ex-husband, Grigory, who is frustrated by the ineptness of a system that does little for its citizens. When Grigory tries to get iodine tablets for the victims of radiation, he finds to his horror that there is only one box. The suffering of the downtrodden is credibly portrayed by the author, and although some are able to rise above their circumstances, it is the tragic fate of the collective many that left an indelible impression on my mind.
The title of the novel comes from the Communist Manifesto, which reads, "All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind." The novel, a remarkable debut, starkly conveys the horrors and ineptitude of a system that oppresses and which only a lucky few can escape.

Radiation, Resilience, Radiance

When a novel like McKeon's "All That is Solid" comes around, you begin to realize that everything else you've read in the past few months isn't worth mentioning. To be honest, I'm having a hard time writing a review that does this work justice. It's a surpising, stunning debut. The writer's handling of the disaster along with the masterful way he tells this story are an award-worthy combination.
Chernobyl.
The word alone reeks of dread, shame, death. Into that horror, McKeon weaves the fictional, bleak lives of a handful of Russian citizens who are affected by it wholly or in part. Their daily lives are shown to have glimmers of hope against a state-run institutionalized existence. We're given glimpses in three different time frames of what the disaster means for them and for their country.
A budding young pianist, a doctor, his ex-wife and a few others are illustrated with careful detail. It's almost as if we're made to hold our breath and watch while McKeon deftly lays them out in front of us in all their damaged, naked humanity. Parts of this book are dark enough, even with out the nuclear fallout in the background. The young musician, Yevgeni, becomes book-ends of sorts to the entire work and we're pulled into the story by him during youth and led back out again when he's an accomplished adult. In between lie all the connections between his relatives and those who lived closest to the power plant. Both the chapters where Yevgeni is bullied and the doctor is abandoned are truly heartbreaking, very hard to take.
Listen, I don't want to spoil the book by revealing any more. I can only say that a much deeper appreciation for where I live, how I'm dressed and what I eat has been brought into clarity by reading McKeon's book. While the subject matter may seem hopeless and grim, the story will definitely make an indelible impression on you. Highly recommended to those who love a good story, regardless of the setting.

Arresting Imagery In A Realistic Tale Of Soviet Life.

It took me a long time to read this book. There's a lot going on here, and it requires some concentration to keep track of all the characters in various locations as they weave in and out of each other's lives. Along with an account of the aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, we also follow the lives of other Soviet citizens in the years leading up to the revolution that shattered the Iron Curtain. We see the unrest and the despair resulting from a life under a regime that uses fear tactics to keep people from speaking the truth or fighting the system.
Here in the U.S. we love to criticize our government, and we're fortunate to have the right to do so. We're also fortunate to have a government with limited powers. In his portrayal of Soviet life, McKeon gives us a taste of what it's like to live under a government that controls every aspect of one's life. They assign you a career and a living space, withhold vital information from the public, and punish even the smallest attempts at self-determination.
When I sat down to write my review and looked over the passages I had marked, I was reminded of how masterful Darragh McKeon is at creating striking imagery, even for the most simple of events. For example, when Maria is remembering the day her marriage to Grigory ended, and she left their apartment for the last time, here is the picture:
“She can still see the way he stood in their small vestibule, between the large mirror on the wall and the small oval one on the coat stand. Both mirrors bounced his reflection between them, so that before closing the door for the last time, Maria found herself leaving not just him but an endless multitude of him. Standing there, his shoulders wrapped in heartbreak.” (page 257)
Alina is a single mother relegated to a life of drudgery, taking in laundry and ironing to make ends meet. This is what her meltdown looks like:
“...she remembers she's left the iron on. She moves to unplug it, does so, and leans against the counter. A shirtsleeve lifts in a stream of breeze, and she turns to the freshly pressed shirts lined up on their hangers, and reaches over and drags them all down, dropping with them. She grabs the whole bunch of them and wrings them into a bundle and bites them, bites down hard, stifling a scream, and they lie there, twisted, until Maria comes home.” (page 332)
There are treasures like this sprinkled throughout the story, and for me these images were a large part of what made the book worth reading. I am not fond of novels written in present tense, and that's probably my only serious criticism of the book. I do still recommend it though, because McKeon's writing was masterful enough to help me overcome my distaste for the verb tense.
I thought the ending was a little too pat, although I can understand McKeon's desire to inject some positivity and hope into what is otherwise a bleak narrative. The redemption to be found in this story is in the way it shows that amid the most dire, hopeless circumstances, there are people whose basic humanity compels them to be kind, even when it means putting themselves at great peril.
