Disappointed

I'm a Grace Burrowes fan and have read and enjoyed most of her books. Although I hate to say it, I was disappointed in this book and can't believe I am giving it only a 3-star rating.

First off, I couldn't believe how differently Nicholas was portrayed in this book from the persona presented in his own earlier book. In this book, he came across as weak, inept and ineffectual. This bothered me a great deal because it was such a departure from who I thought he was from the other book.

Although I liked Tremaine, I had trouble liking Nita. Her personality was just too bossy and overbearing for me. The reason for breaking the engagement seemed contrived.

I am going to read the next book in this series in the hopes that it will be better.

Since reading my very first Grace Burrowes book last year, she has quickly become one of my favorite voices in historical romance. The Captive was on my ‘Best of’ list for 2014 reads, and for this reason, I wonder if my expectations may have been too high for Tremaine’s True Love. I loved Tremaine and Nita, the main characters, but as I was reading the book, I kept waiting for something to happen. It never really did. It was a slow story overall with no build up and no action.

Tremaine was a gentle and kind-hearted hero. He is a perfect example of why I love this author so much – in a genre that’s filled with high-handed alpha men, she manages to make hers fiercely caring without crossing the line into controlling. He had interests other than carousing, and I like how the fact that he fell in love with Nita took him by surprise, but he still stayed practical about things, as was his nature. Nita and the way everyone viewed her threw me for a loop. She was seen to be so selfless and caring, but she never gave a second thought to the fact that her family, and then Tremaine, were worried about her health and safety. I couldn’t help but like her character despite this, because she was such a champion for people who were looked down upon by society and may not have received treatment any other way.

I think one of the things that made it hard for me to get lost in the story was the fact that the secondary characters got a lot of page time in this one. I think they overshadowed Tremaine and Nita, and had we gotten less of them, it may have helped the pacing a bit.

While this book may not have been as good as some others I have read from this author, there were enjoyable and romantic moments in this one. If you’re a fan of Grace Burrowes, I think you’ll find things in the story to appreciate. I’ll be continuing with the series.

Good Read

This is book one in "True Gentlemen" series. Note there is a book before this one: The Duke's Disaster (True Gentlemen #.5). I did feel that it would have been helpful to read that one first but I did not think it stopped me from enjoying the book. So I would say this is a stand alone book if you are reading this one without the other one. Our heroine, Lady Nita Haddonfield is somewhat different for me in what heroines usually are. Nita is very independent, not a virgin, and seems to be the one taking care of most of the housing and tenets health care. Now that her brother is married she has only her "doctoring" to do on the tenets and helping people that way. Our hero is Tremaine St. Michael, who is staying a few days at her (and her sisters) and her brothers house to look over some sheep that he is selling. For me I didn't see the possessiveness, or the fast want of the heroine as in some books. It seem to me to be a slow build up and more of a friendship/understanding. Which isn't a bad thing it just I like the real manly type hero's that can't seem to be without the heroine. Overall I liked the book and was glad to have read it. I hope that you enjoy the book too!

About the Author
Timothy Chhim is a motivational speaker and owner of an Allstate Insurance Agency in Nanuet, New York, USA. He was born in a rural village in Cambodia and from a young age dreamed of freedom and a better life. When the communist Khmer Rouge, under the leadership of Pol Pot, seized power in 1975, Timothy was among thousands who were forced to leave the capital city of Phnom Penh. He was singled out as an educated citizen as well as a Republic official, having served as a police officer, and was sent to the jungle to be killed. He managed to escape, after many failed attempts, and survived to reach the safety of Thailand and later the USA. Tom Cunningham is a motivational speaker, radio host, and life coach. He was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of five, a disease that affects every joint in his body, causing constant pain and making many day-to-day activities challenging. He has been in the hospital over 40 times for numerous surgeries. In addition, high doses of the steroid prednisone stunted his growth, and he stands 5’1” tall. Despite the pain and challenges that come from living with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Tom chooses a positive mental attitude, and answers “Amazing!” to anyone who asks how he is. Tom and his wife, Kim, live in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Taylor Tagg is a published author, professional speaker, and radio show host. Delightful Surprise.

This is a sneaky little book. Full of surprises. Was seeking my usual dose of "entertaining hardship" stories, you know the type, a tale of courage, endurance, and achievement, so impressive that the degree of my own personal challenges pale in comparison. You see, drawing off the strength of others' helps me get through my day with a little less angst and self pity. That's why tales of super-human achievements are a mainstay on my night stand.

But this crafty little book offered an unexpected twist. It engaged me on a different and deeper level than usual. The story tellers some how lured me off my mental sofa and into exercise mode. Trust me, I'm too lazy, or too old, or too wise, for mental exercise. However, these authors (with the aid of an excellent editor I'm sure) enabled me to shake off the cob webs in some rarely visited corners of the mind.

Not to scare you off, but this book triggered some over due introspection. The good news is that its dose of medicine is more powerful and longer lasting than the typical book of its kind.

A delightful page-turner filled with fortitude, good will, and actionable guidance. Many thanks and good wishes to the authors. Kudos to the editor.

A Total Steal

I was completely surprised when I saw this at Barnes and Noble today, and even more so when I looked at its contents. For $25 you get 40 high quality posters for all of the major Assassin's Creed games. Here's a short break-down of each one.

-18 Black Flag posters (a majority of them star Edward, but there's some great concept art pieces and a decent amount of the supporting cast).
-12 Assassin's Creed 3 posters (including the Tyranny of King Washington and Aveline).
-3 for Revelations
-3 for Brotherhood
-1 for Assassin's Creed 2 (which is a bit of a shame, imo)
-4 for Assassin's Creed 1
-1 starring Altair, Ezio, Connor, Edward, Aveline, and Nikolai Orelov (from The Fall and The Chain).

(No Desmond posters D:)

They're approximately 12" by 15.5", and are double-sided, so if you want to hang up multiples you may run into a tough decision.

But overall, you absolutely cannot beat what you're getting for the price. I hope they continue to do a second edition with AC5 and beyond.

Exceeds expectations.... wonderful gor any AC fan

Let me just start by saying this is awesome! I expected it to be good quality but when I got it it really exceeded my expectations. The color and image quality is outstanding and all posters are printed on cardstock-like material. I expected them to be on plain glossed poster paper. I do wish there were more posters from AC2 but since I am a fan of the entire series its not a big problem. The posters are printed front & back so if there are two on the same page you like... You may have trouble deciding. Great product and it would make a great gift for any Assassin's Creed fan.

My son really likes the poster collection (as do I). The only "complaint" is the fact that they are double-sided simply because he has trouble picking between some of them. Really nice collection though and would recommend for any AC fans :)

Police Academy no stars (1984)--It's so bad, maybe you should pool your money and draw straws and send one of the guys off to rent it so that in the future, whenever you think you're sitting through a bad comedy, he could shake his head, chuckle tolerantly, and explain that you don't know what bad is.

Dear God * (1996)--Dear God is the kind of movie where you walk out repeating the title, but not with a smile.

Some great reviews - and some decent ones

I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie is a great title, but it doesn't really sum up this book. It's a collection of reviews of movies rated between zero and two stars - and if you know Roger Ebert's ratings system, you'll know that two stars isn't by any means a total pan. And that's where the book gets weak.
The zero to one star reviews are truly funny; it's quite amusing to read the distillation of bitterness and hatred that comes from forcing a movie lover to sit through a terrible movie. On another level, it's also quite amusing to try to imagine how these movies ever got made in the first place - some of them leave you wondering how it is that the producers did not notice they didn't have a script until after shooting started. Others leave you wondering why the actors and director didn't take the easy way out and simply kill themselves rather than complete the movie.
Unfortunately, the book is padded with reviews of some movies that it appears Ebert only disliked. And mild dislike doesn't give rise to the same kind of humor as loathing does. Had these reviews been cut, the book would probably have been 50 pages shorter, and it would have been a riot from beginning to end, albeit one that left you with a serious disinclination to go to the movies. (Or, depending on the kind of person you are, with a strong *inclination* to head for the video rental store.)
If the editor, author, or publisher truly felt the need to extend the book beyond the despised movies, it would have been much more gripping and entertaining to include a few four-star reviews - maybe one per chapter? - to show what the other end of the spectrum looked like. That would also have staved off the erroneous impression this book can leave - that either Ebert hates everything or every movie is terrible.
My advice: read it, but not too quickly. There's a limit to how much badness the human constitution can stand. Remember, Ebert didn't see all these movies at one sitting, either.

Fantastic collection of Ebert's harshest reviews.....

It could be argued that Ebert is truly at his best when he is savagely attacking the worst films ever made. While his criticism is always sharp and insightful, his negative reviews are much more entertaining, employing sarcasm, bitterness, and outright hatred for the drivel he must endure. The book provides a diverse selection, ranging from the early 1970s to more recent disasters. Although he attacks small, obscure works, he is much more satisfied attacking the giants; the "sacred cows" of cinema that, by virtue of their budgets, are believed to be above criticism. Ebert is dedicated to his craft and would probably prefer to spend his time in the company of classics, but few individuals display such giddiness when given the "privilege" of witnessing true cinematic chaos. His humor is to our benefit.

I Loved, Loved, Loved This Book

This is Roger Ebert's greatest book. Everything about it is absolutely splendid, from the cover photograph, to the last word of the index. I have always been a fan of bad movies, and I enjoy seeing what doesn't work cinematically as much as what does. This is a collection of Ebert's best reviews on the subject of what decidedly does not work.
Ebert is always a quick wit, and though I don't always agree with him, I always find his writing insightful to illuminating his point of view. In this book, though, I believe that I am in complete agreement on all the movies that I have seen. Indeed, some of these reviews are so well written and intriguing, I had to see the film in question just to know if it could be that bad. For instance after reading about the silly character names, the telepathic parrots and the man eating vegetables, I just HAD to see "At The Earth's Core". It is unquestionably as wretched as Ebert says, and I delighted in its badness. I have now set my sights on "North", but that is allegedly much harder to watch.
If you want an accounting of mostly big budget cinematic fiascoes, this is the book for you. I hope Ebert writes another book soon called 'More Movies I Hated, Hated, Hated.'

The Best Translation of Fujita Currently Available in English

Fujita was the last Koga Ryu master, and stated that he would take all the teachings to the grave with him when he died, so there are no modern students or teachers of Koga lineage left from who to learn about this unique style. For the person who would still like to learn as much as is possible about the art historically, from the words of an authentic master, the ONLY option is to read Fujita's works. There are simply no other accredited sources, and to access the sources that do exist, one must either be completely fluent in Japanese, or get your hands on a reliable translation.

THIS is the best translation of Fujita's work currently available in English. It is written in a clear concise manner, and perhaps most importantly, it does not vary from the original or contradict Fujita's statement about Koga Ryu ending with him. I own many manuals on Ninjutsu, both historical and modern, fictional and fact, in Japanese and English, and rarely do I find one that can be compared side by side to its' original source material. This is such a work.

Don Roley is certified as a Japanese translator at the highest levels the Japanese test for, and it shows in his work on this volume. In addition to excellent language skills, Mr.Roley has extensive personal experience in Japanese Martial Arts, so brings both a deep personal understanding of the culture as well as the warrior mindset. Perhaps most important to me, he also very clearly confirms Fujita's statement about the end of Koga Ryu - this is important as there are many unscrupulous people who are still to this day trying to claim connection to Fujita's system, and who author flawed or false works to profit from that deception.

This book is a translation of a work by Fujita Seiko which seems to demonstrate how ninjutsu can be adapted to be useful in the modern world. Through reading this work you can gain a glimpse of Fujita Seiko's ninjutsu as well as a sense of his practicality; for example, he talks about how useful flashlights are and the advantages of them over torches. After reading this text I gained the impression that Fujita Seiko believed that ninjutsu was able to modernize its methods to remain relevant in the world. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in ninjutsu, Japanese history, or military history. this book is a manual on ninjutsu and therefore would not be very suitable for readers who are looking to be entertained by a story.

This translation of a masterful piece of writing on the martial arts by skilled martial artist and highly experienced Japanese translator Don Roley is a fantastic read for any student of the martial arts, and of course most particularly ninjutsu. The historical value in this work, the last master of Koga-ryu Ninjutsu's writings is immeasurable as well, and unless you can read Japanese, such work is only as good as it's translator and Roley has done excellent work here.

A Must-Read Parenting Book!

I don't often rave about parenting books because everybody has their own style of parenting and every kid is different. There is a reason there are thousands of parenting books on the market. However, this one stands alone! I only got this because it was required reading for our adoption agency, but I am SO glad it was.

Though there are times when I wished the author had gone into greater detail (especially on the nutrition chapter), this book does a great job of providing parents with MANY tools that I feel every parent can benefit from. It is geared toward adopted/abused children, but I really felt like it pertained a lot about my biological children as well. This book can give you a sense of control especially with stubborn, strong-willed children. I speak from experience. I don't know which is more helpful, the tools offered by this book or the sense of having options. I don't think you can go wrong with this book!

A really helpful resource

I adopted a child at birth who is now 9. She has since been diagnosed with a mood disorder--probably bi-polar. The Connected Child was as helpful to me as Ross Greene's books about the Explosive Child. I learned something new from every chapter, especially the last few chapters on Dealing with Defiance, Nurturing at Every Opportunity and Proactive Strategies to Make Life Easier. Simple suggestions made by the authors, such as watching for signs of overload, speaking with authority, rehearsing the child for what's coming, helping your child identify emotions, among many others have stuck with me. I've even used them successfully. The book is written simply and clearly, easy to skim through to find sections that apply to your situation. I highly recommend this book. Erica Manfred

Best Adoption Book Ever

I have read a LOT of books about adoption. This was the only one that changed my life and the way I relate to my kids. The first time I read it, it was too hard for me to read and I had to put it down (I felt too much guilt, because I was doing everything wrong and had already made so many mistakes). When I was finally able to give myself some grace, I tried it again- and now I read it over and over again, sometimes daily if I need it. It's so practical, which is unlike most adoption books I've read. It tells you exactly what to do in disciplinary or tense situations. I feel empowered after reading it, and feel a flood of sympathy for my firstborn, who was adopted from South Korea at nine months. I can't rave about this book enough.

About the Author
A graduate of Amherst College and the University of Virginia, Jay Silverman has received fellowhsips from the Fulbright-Hayes Foundation, the Andrew Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has taught at Vriginia Highlands Community College and at Nassau Community College where he received the Honors Program award for Excellence in Teaching.

Elaine Hughes came to New York City from Mississippi in 1979 to attend a National Endowment for the Humanities seminar at Columbia Uniersity. She has taught writing for more than 25 years--primarily at Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi, and at Nassau Community College--and has conducted writing workshops for many organizations. She is the author of WRITING FROM THE INNER SELF.

As Chair of the English Department of Nassau Community College for six years, Diana Roberts Wienbroer coordinated a department of 150 faculty members and served on the Executive Council of the Association of Departments of English. Besides teaching writing for over thirty years, both in Texas and New York, she has studied and taught film criticism. She is also the author of THE McGRAW-HILL GUIDE TO ELECTRONIC RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION, 1997.

Comprehensive and quick reference in one easy to use package

This book provides a complete, easy to understand description of all aspects of grammatically correct writing. But what makes this book truly exceptional is the integral quick reference guides in every chapter that allow you to make a quick check when you are in the midst of your writing project. I have not found any other book that works this well for me; I have used it in place of the corresponding required text for my college English classes.

Quick and easy to use.

In my line of work, I often find myself in the position of writing for others as well as myself: letters, paragraphs and sometimes longer pieces. Rules of Thumb is exactly what I need as someone who loves grammar, but has been out of school for 15+ years and needs a quick...you guessed it..."rule of thumb" on a particular topic. I highly recommend it for the workplace. The pages are laid out in such a way that merely thumbing through the book allows your eye to land on the topic you're looking for. When all you need is a quick reminder, or even consise 'how, why, when and where' examples -- this is the book to choose!

I am a college English teacher and I use this as a required text for a course about writing a reasearch paper. I like it because it combines the rules of MLA style with some very practical grammar rules and also includes guidelines for library research.

Ramsey, one of the greatest Archbishops of Canterbury, delivered these previously unpublished reflections on the ethos, historical tradition, and emphasis of Anglicanism to an American audience in 1979. Ramsey here stresses the catholicity, scriptural basis, and the use of reason and experience, as well as the openness to various interpretation and emphases within the Anglican tradition. His own evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of various trends within Anglicanism makes this book especially important. Highly recommended for seminary and large public and academic libraries.

About the Author
Arthur Michael Ramsey was born in 1904, became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1961, and died in 1988. His published works include, The Gospel and the Catholic Church, From Gore to Temple:An Era in Anglican Theology, Holy Spirit, and The Christian Priest Today. The Rev. Dale Coleman, rector of the Church of the Holy Faith in Santa Fe, New Mexico and friend of the late Michael Ramsey, compiled and edited these lectures delivered by Ramsey at Nashotah House, an Episcopal Seminary.

An Excellent Introduction

Rowan Williams, the current Archbishop of Canterbury, notes in his foreword that this is a book that is really needed right now. Given that tensions in the Anglican Communion have been increasing for quite some time and that they are now at the point where the Anglican Communion is likely to change in some significant and painful ways over the next few months, it is well worth looking back and seeing something of what others (particularly the heroes of the past!) saw when they looked at Ekklesia Anglicana.

This work is a short one. Compiled from class notes and given Ramsey's editorial approval, the chapters that make up The Anglican Spirit come across as quite conversational - much as if one were sitting the classroom where Ramsey first delivered these. In short, Ramsey gives a quick tour of the history of Anglican thought and practice while giving a bit of theological commentary on the side: criticisms, critiques and approvals. He brings out things that one would likely not know if one were not an expert and well trained in the history of Anglican thought - again, giving the book a conversational tone while sacrificing none of its content.

One is left with a sense that Anglicanism does have a grounding in Scripture, Tradition and Reason - that, contrary to what many think, one may really speak of an Anglican spirit and an Anglican thought process. Anglicans, like other Christians, hold the Scriptures in the highest regard and they believe that the Scriptures must be read not only in the light of higher Biblical criticism, but through the light of the many different thinkers of the Church, especially the creeds and the first four Ecumenical Councils. Ramsey notes that these four have always been authoritative for Anglicans in a way that the last three Ecumenical Councils were not - not that they were or are wrong, but that they never had a grip on the Western (Anglican, Roman Catholic and Protestant) imagination as a whole.

Perhaps more difficult, though, is the idea that "reason" - the bogeyman of so much contemporary thought - ought to play a part in the Christian life in general, and the Anglican life in particular. Ramsey does not propose that one ought to disregard the past in light of new cultural configurations, but that one must ask one's self - the Church must ask itself - how the Gospel is to be given in such a way that its relevancy is seen in a particular culture. This is not watered-down relativism, but an honest and forthright approach to reading both Scripture and Tradition in light of one's contemporary situation.

It would have been welcome to read a chapter on how exactly the Church is to use Reason to engage a particular culture, but Ramsey doesn't touch upon this (perhaps it was not as urgent an issue when this book was first put together a good 13 years ago). Yet, perhaps there is an answer in his ecclesiology. He proves quite prophetic at points, particularly when he discusses unilateralism in the communion and how dangerous it is not only to Anglicans but to all Christians. One can - and should - ask whether or not this means that Ramsey refuses to let a given culture be self-justifying; it is worth reading his chapter on the church and noting what he doesn't say as much as what he does say.

Yet, when he discusses the relationship of Anglicanism to the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, he notes that Anglicanism does not exist for itself and that perhaps the time will come when it will have to dissolve to make way for a greater good in the Church catholic. While very few would want to see this happen, one must admit that it takes a good bit of humility to write this sort of thing, especially since Ramsey was the Archbishop of Canterbury at a truly revolutionary time in both global Christianity and world history.

Hopefully these latter words of Ramsey's will prove to be less prophetic and more along the lines of a warning, not unlike the recent Windsor Report. Of course, only time will tell. In the time between, however, this is an excellent introduction to the spirit of Anglicanism by someone who truly was one of Anglicanism's greatest spirits.

A classic on genuine anglicanism

Michael Ramsey (former Archbishop of Canterbury) sets out the history and heart of anglicansim in this very readable introduction to Anglicanism. His insights and perceptions help us get to the history and heart of true anglicanism and its relationship to other churches, especially the Roman Catholic.
The first 2 chapters are key for anyone wanting to discover or return to genuine anglicanism, versus a (post-)modernist, liberal interpretation. Enjoy it!

This book was a great introduction to the Anglican Faith. It is presented in a conversational manner, not a dry text book approach. I am very thankful for the helpful and refreshing overview as I investigate the Anglican tradition.
