The next best thing to the class!

The class was great. The snippits of interview tapes were fascinating. The transcripts were wonderful. Now it's all been condensed into print. Big Mike is not only a great teacher and great composer, but he can interview, too! Finally, after having to suffer through many ill-timed visits (why always during MY lesson, eh?) to LA, the book is finally finished. It is destined to become a classic of the Film Music world. Tony Thomas may have left us, but now we've got Big Mike. Hmmmm. Sounds like a film Morricone might score....

Fascinating for both musicians and non-musicians

I found Michael Schelle's book to be both engaging and fascinating. He manages to "get inside" the composers he interviews, to earn their trust and respect, and to establish a "composer to composer" connection with them. They respond by opening up to him with inside information on the Hollywood music scene that makes for fascinating reading for anyone interested in music and/or film. I highly recommend this book.

Schelle approached the interviews with out of the ordinary and intelligent questions, making for very unique interviews.The book includes interviews with John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, Howard Shore, Christopher Young and many others. I strongly recommend this book as an entertaining look at the making of music for films!

Double Consciousness

The selected stories in Albahari’s Learning Cyrillic explore what Albahari calls the “double consciousness” of the immigrant. The titles of the twenty-seven stories, a short form well suited to Albahari’s wry powers of observation and invention, reflect the nature of the short story as Goethe so well (and untranslatably) defined it: “eine sich ereignende unerhörte Begebenheit”—a sensational or incredible event taking place in the narration. “Squirrel, Peanut, Hat,” “Plums in Saskatchewan,” “Holding Hands,” “Calgary Real Estate,” “The Pajamas,” and “Hitler in Chicago” all announce their intent to recount a single event. And in Albahari’s case, these single events will disclose, each in its own way, the double consciousness of the stories’ narrators.

The stories in this collection are unsettling, especially as they demonstrate that identity is anything but singular.

“Learning Cyrillic,” the book’s title story, is divided into 37 numbered paragraphs, a formal device quite different from the novel without paragraphs but that likewise slows and disrupts a reading. The story is told by a lonely Serb who has emigrated to a cold, Canadian city where on Friday evenings he goes to church, not to pray, he says, but to teach Serbian to children of fellow immigrants. The story juxtaposes two lost causes: the impossible task of preserving Serbian language and culture in a context in which the English-speaking children are eager to assimilate and the equally impossible attempt by a mysterious Indian to preserve his Siksika language and culture in a place and time where his people are known only as Blackfeet whose remains are displayed in a museum.

The events of this story are largely unremarkable, but as the fragments accumulate a reader begins to sense the narrator’s profound loneliness, a feeling heightened by the isolation shared in somewhat different ways by the genial but somewhat clueless priest in whose church the Serbian lessons are given and by the Indian who eventually reveals that his name is Thunder Cloud. The story’s last three sections (35, 36, 37) end with three bleak sentences: “I shut my eyes and I’m gone. . . . I find a dead mouse. . . . I start to walk until I find myself across the street.” Gone, dead, the narrator finds himself only on the other side of the street, not within the church and not in the Cyrillic letters of his Serbian language. He finds himself, as do all immigrants, in the language of the new country, in English-language “green letters” of the pedestrian signal that invite him to cross the street. The German word for misery, “Elend,” means in its root sense “out of or away from one’s country.” The characters in this and the other fine stories by David Albahari are all—humorously and gently and each with his or her quirks—miserably away from home. Which leaves me sad as well in the early darkness of this November afternoon. All readers are immigrants.

An unabashed advanced GIS textbook

I'm not your average GISer. I have a BS in Mathematics and worked for 15 years as a software developer. This book was a required text for the class in Advanced Vector GIS that was part of my MS in GIS. I currently use it as a reference as I work on my PhD in pure GIScience.

This book covers GIS data structures and databases in a way that a Computer Scientist would appreciate. It covers GIS algorithms in a way that an Applied Mathmetician would like. It covers GIS topology in a way that a Pure Mathmetician could learn from. It covers uncertainty in a way that a Statistician would enjoy.

If you are, say a graduate student in mathematics or computer science and want to understand what all the GIS hype is about, you've found a great, concise volume that covers an intense amount of information. If you are a geographer who needs to formalize some language concerning theory and methods for a publication, then this is a good start.

If you are looking for something like "how to delineate a watershed in ArcView 9", skip it and look elsewhere.

Excellent introductory book on GIS

Having read many books of the kind I can state with confidence that this one is the best introductory book on the topic. The authors claim that the book is best-suited to people approaching GISs with a computer-science perspective and/or background and this should be taken into consideration by all prospective buyers. However, the book should still be a most valuable resource to readers from other backgrounds, as it remains the most comprehensive in its domain, and is very readable thanks to the lucid writing style of the authors.

Each chapter except the first, which serves as a general introduction, deals with a particular sub-discipline within GIS. Chapter 2 describes the basics of databases.

Chapter 3 clarifies important topological and metric concepts.

Chapter 4 enters the area of field vs. object data models.

Chapter 5 deals with raster and vector structures as well as with computational geometry and geometric algorithms.

Chapter 6 moves even closer to the physical computer level and discusses indexes (access structures) and trees.

Chapter 7 is about architectures (distributed, homogeneous, heterogeneous systems).

Chapter 8 talks about GIS-interfaces.

Until that point, the book has a very logical structure with each chapter being the logical extension of the next.

Chapters 9 and 10 exist only in this second edition and provide some brief excursions into the topics of handling uncertainty and time in GIS respectively. They go into somewhat less detail than the previous chapters, yet are very well written.

Remember that this book is introductory, hence dont expect to learn the intricate details of topics such as databases and computational geometry. The authors manage however, to strike a fine balance between the amount of concepts and methods being presented and the degree of detail to which each of them is analysed. Therefore the book retains its clear introductory character while maintaining a very high informational content. In addition, the authors have done a fantastic job at compiling relevant bibliographies at the end of each chapter where the readers may pursue additional details should they wish to. The graphics and figures are also self-explanatory and do a fine job at complementing the text. Verbosity and typos are scarce if at all existent.

I recommend this book as the most comprehensive overview of, and a very good reference source for, GISs. It will be invaluable not only for newbies but also for mid to hi-level experts who wish to consolidate their knowledge or have a trusted reference. Undoubtedly, an indispensable resource in the library of anyone interested in geographic information systems.

Pythagoras, born at Samos about 572 B.C., was probably the first to hold that the earth is spherical in shape, while his later followers anticipated Copernicus with the then-startling hypothesis that the earth was not the center of the universe but a planet like the others. Heraclides of Pontus (c. 388–315 B.C.), a pupil of Plato, declared that the apparent daily rotation of the heavenly bodies is due, not to a rotation of the heavenly sphere about an axis through the center of the earth, but to the rotation of the earth itself around its own axis. Secondly, Heraclides discovered that Venus and Mercury revolve around the sun like satellites. Perhaps the greatest astronomer of antiquity was Hipparchus, who flourished between 161 and 126 B.C. He compiled a catalog of fixed stars to the number 850 or more, made great improvements in the instruments used for astronomical observations, and discovered the precession of the equinoxes, among other accomplishments. The astronomy of Hipparchus takes its definitive form in the Syntaxis (commonly called the Almagest) of Ptolemy, written about A.D. 150, which held the field until the time of Copernicus.

About the Author

Thomas Little Heath: Bringing the Past to Life
Thomas Little Heath (1861–1940) was unusual for an authority on many esoteric, and many less esoteric, subjects in the history of mathematics in that he was never a university professor. The son of an English farmer from Lincolnshire, Heath demonstrated his academic gifts at a young age; studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, from 1879 to 1882; came away with numerous awards; and obtained the top grade in the 1884 English Civil Service examination. From that foundation, he went to work in the English Treasury, rose through the ranks, and by 1913, was permanent secretary to the Treasury, effectively the head of its operations. He left that post in 1919 at the end of the first World War, worked several years at the National Debt office, and retired in 1926.

During all of that time, however, he became independently one of the world's leading authorities on the history of mathematics, especially on the history of ancient Greek mathematics. Heath's three-volume edition of Euclid is still the standard, it is generally accepted that it is primarily through Heath's great work on Archimedes that the accomplishments of Archimedes are known as well as they are.

Dover has reprinted these and other books by Heath, preserving over several decades a unique legacy in the history of mathematical scholarship.

Invaluable

If you really love the history of astronomy, (and you're interested in the Greeks) then this book is perfect. It is a collection of what Greek authors ACTUALLY said. All the big names are in here. Even Philolaus is in here. It's just wonderful. There is a little introduction to each astronomer and then it's on to what they wrote. I find it invaluable.

Astronomy was not the ancient Greeks' best subject

Having been truly astonished by the towering mathematical achievements of the ancient Greeks, as translated in many books by Heath, I was equally astonished by how weak the ancient Greeks were in astronomy. Probably more than half of the extracts from ancient works in this book are pure waffle.

It seems that the ancient Greeks, from about 850 to 150 BC, gave the world the first alphabet, mathematical proofs, history, philosophy, democracy, politics, the olympic games, gymnasiums, university education, coins, wages, mercenary armies, jury trials, literacy (about 50%), book-shops, and civilisation itself. What they didn't do well at was astronomy, physics and chemistry, as far as I can tell. But this introductory essay by Heath, and the numerous quotations and fragments, left me scratching my head, trying to think why they could be so weak in a subject which is, on the face of it, amenable to logical, rational analysis.

There are some clues in this book to the reasons for the dismal failure of Greek Astronomy. There is a quote on pages 28-29 from Plutarch about Anaxagoras, saying this:

"For Anaxagoras, who was the first to put in writing, most clearly and most courageously of all men, the explanation of the moon's illumination and darkness, did not belong to ancient times, and even his account was not common property, but was still a secret, current only among a few, and received by them with caution, or simply on trust. For in those days they refused to tolerate the natural philosophers and star-gazers, as they were then called, who presumed to fritter away the deity into unreasoning causes, blind forces, and necessary properties. Thus Protogoras was exiled, and Anaxagoras was imprisoned, and with difficulty saved by Pericles."

There are several other quotations which suggest a similar danger in publishing rational astronomy ideas which contradicted religion. Plato, pages 40-42, wrote that knowledge can not be obtained from observation, but must rather be determined by thinking about it. The writings of Aristotle were complete twaddle, and this book contains some prime examples of Aristotle's twaddle-thinking. The fact that Aristotle's views on astronomy were enforced throughout the Dark Ages until Copernicus, Galileo and others put a stop to it, is the reason why science was held back for more than 1600 years. The Geminus quote on pages 123-125 strongly argues that astronomers should keep their noses out of physics and not try to step into the territory of philosophers.

So I can highly recommend this book to see how the ancient Greeks totally failed in astronomy. They didn't even know as much as the earlier Mesopotamians and Egyptians. Luckily the book is short, so the pain is mercifully brief.

A doxography

I had to look up "Doxography" in the Oxford English Dictionary - it is a collection of philosophical opinions. The book "Greek Astronomy" is a Dover reprint of a book written in 1932. It consists of a long (57 pages) introduction followed by a great many quotes (rendered into English) from ancient Greek authors. The selection emphasizes general questions, such as "Does the Earth move?" - according to Ptolemy it does not. Perhaps useful as a souce book. But then again, perhaps not.
