Inspired by the hope that the experience of satisfied husbands and wives might provide useful lessons to others, Wallerstein, a clinical psychologist and specialist on divorce, and Sandra Blakeslee, who writes frequently for The New York Times, interviewed 50 predominantly middle-class, northern California couples who had been married nine years or more and had at least one child. These strong marriages flourish, they argue, because every partner confronted a series of psychological tasks including separating emotionally from the family of childhood, carving out his or her autonomy and creating an environment where anger and conflict could be safely vented. The couples reveal their interior lives in rich, explicit detail.

Although Wallerstein is best known for her work on divorce, she and Blakeslee (coauthors of Second Chances, LJ 2/1/89) have put together a very appealing book based on interviews with 50 couples who are still together, and still happy, after years of marriage. Most of the book is concerned with defining the four types of marriages (romantic, rescue, companionate, and traditional) that Wallerstein discovered through her interviews. Descriptions of four couples who idealize these types are given in minute detail. The rest of the book outlines nine developmental tasks-derived from Wallerstein's practice as well as the interviews-that couples need to accomplish if their marriage is to be a happy one. Despite some oddities, such as the amount of extraneous detail given when discussing the interviewees' homes, and the fact that this was based on a small and skewed sample group-all participants were middle or upper-middle class and all but one couple were Caucasian-this book will appeal to public library users who want a clearly written and clearly thought out analysis of this universally interesting topic.

Best of all the books I've read in preparing for marriage

I have read 10-15 books relating to marriage preparation and making sure one is ready to pick and BE a good spouse. This was by far the best. The author reassured me that people who grew up with unhappy childhoods & unhappy parents have as good a chance at a happy marriage as others. It also made me aware of many issues these couples had that I had not considered. This book prompted me to think about what I want from my future husband as a type of marriage, as an emotional partner, as a parental partner etc. MUST READ! I also highly recommend "What you Need to know before you fall in Love" as a good gut check of what is normal in a relationship and what isn't, what areas you need to check on (do you have a meeting of the minds spiritually, financially, intellectually etc), and it has a great chapter on warning signs (are you dating this person to impress your boss, annoy your parents, or get revenge on an ex?). I highly recommend Harville Hendrix's Book "How to Find the Love you Want" for a more in depth look at how our childhood affects our need for love and influences our search for the source of that love.

We could surely use more studies like this one

The authors bring a rather unusual perspective to the study of marriage -- rather than examining how it has failed or is failing, they examine how marriage can succeed. The book provides a commendable example of a study focusing on success instead of failure. The authors first define a successful marriage, then discuss nine principles common to any good marriage and use several couples as case studies to illustrate and personalize these principles. The book uses a rather small, homogenous, and politically incorrect sample -- nearly all couples were selected by the authors and were lily-white, heterosexual, reasonably honest and cheerful Americans. Of course, many ground-breaking and valid scientific studies have successfully used such small, homogenous and politically incorrect cohorts. The book is not a cross-cultural study, an historical analysis, or a "how-to" guide for "making marriage work," and those whose marriages are in trouble may not find this book much of a substitute for self-analysis or competent counseling.
Since history began, in nearly all societies, marriage has successfully survived despite never-ending pressures from those who have sought to abolish, revolutionize, over-idealize, or trivialize it. Marriage has proven flexible, durable, and critically important to individuals and to societies. Nevertheless, individuals and societies should frequently re-examine and re-explore marriage if they are to gain the most benefits from it -- marriage and success are verbs as well as nouns. Marriage and the family certainly need attentive examination today, since they remain under tremendous stresses from those who wish to change (or destroy) them and from forces causing them to fail at an increasing rate.
The authors have given us a fine example of such an examination. They write remarkably well (no surprise, given Ms Blakeslee's wonderful columns in the NY Times Science Section, which first drew me to this book). They relate how marriage can be enriching, empowering, dynamic, transformative, redemptive, and positive (I found myself cheering on one of the subjects whose marriage succeeded despite enormous psychological problems dating from his childhood). As the husband of a wife whose parents had a successful marriage, as the child of a successful marriage, and as a member of a thirty-three year old successful marriage, I found the principles outlined in this book to be reasonably accurate and helpful. No book could be the last word, but this one is a fine place to start.

Good marriage?

Some relationships in this book appeared healthy. For example, the guy who defied his mother by marrying his fiancé. He was quite young at the time, yet had the maturity to choose his own path, even if that meant upsetting his mother.

However, I questioned the healthiness of others. For example, one couple felt that without each other, they'd panic as if being sucked into a black hole. Feeling emotionally incomplete, they latched onto their partners hoping their partners would save them...kind of like a drowning victim clutching a floating device for dear life.

But a drowning and desperate person doesn't make a good partner. I've been on the receiving end of a relationship like this & it felt very suffocating. I eventually left this relationship and am glad I did. The author may view this type of relationship as good, but I saw it as suffocating.

The chapter that completely turned me off, though, was the one on infidelity. The author asked "good marriage" couples their views on infidelity. These couples said they'd be okay if their partner cheated as long as the affair was brief and resulted out of loneliness - like being apart due to a long business trip.

So, sneaking around, breaking mutually agreed upon vows, and lying to your partners face is okay as long as you invent a good enough excuse? That sounds desperate to me.
I believe good character should matter more than good excuses that disguise poor character.

Take one woman who cheated on her husband. When asked if she felt any remorse, the woman LAUGHED and replied, "Not at all."
When asked how the marriage was going at the time, she replied, "It was fine. But the moon was full, and my husband was 5,000 miles away."

Now, I've heard some pretty lame excuses for cheating...but blaming the moon?
I wonder how casually this woman would've reacted if, while she was away, her husband had an affair, too. After all, he was also 5,000 miles away. Would she find HIS infidelity funny enough to laugh about? More importantly, if he knew of her affair, would he find it funny? Would he still consider the marriage a good one?

In another example, a wife feeling depleted by her husband's breakdown and depression said, "I gave myself the present of a brief affair with a much younger man."
I wonder, though, if this generosity extended to her husband, too...allowing him to also seek out "presents" whenever he felt drained by his wife. I'm guessing like the previous example, this marriage was "good" based on how ignorant the husband was.

Both of these women, as well as other women in that chapter, spoke of committing adultery as a perfectly normal way to treat someone you love...but it's not normal or loving.

Trust is a precious gift someone can give you. Instead of handling that precious gift with care, they took advantage of it for their own selfish gain. If people can behave this selfishly and still be considered a "good marriage" couple, that's setting the bar pretty low.

On the bright side, the author does advise against cheating., however, I disagree with her reason. She says marriage involves sacrifice and one sacrifice is settling for a tamer sex life. Well, if you phrase monogamy like that, who in their right mind would choose it?

Monogamy doesn't have to be tame. On a surface level, you can add excitement with different positions and locales. On a deeper level, you add excitement by being vulnerable enough to trust your partner with your deepest desires.
So monogamy is as tame or as creative as the couple who makes it.

As a single person, I like reading self-help books that model healthy behavior for long-lasting relationships. Unfortunately, this book wasn't helpful.

About the Author
Aaron Baker is the winner of the 2007 Katharine Bakeless Nason Prize for poetry, selected by Stanley Plumly and awarded by Middlebury College and the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference. A former Wallace Stegner Fellow, Baker

Arvind Narayanan is assistant professor of computer science at Princeton University. Joseph Bonneau is a postdoctoral researcher at the Applied Cryptography Group at Stanford University. Edward Felten is director of Princeton's Center for Information Technology Policy. Andrew Miller is a PhD student in computer science at the University of Maryland. Steven Goldfeder is a PhD student in computer science at Princeton.

Solid Introduction to Bitcoin and Crypto-Currencies

This book does a nice job of explaining Bitcoin and crypto-currency technologies. The start of the book discusses technologies preceding Bitcoin and why many of these systems failed. From there the building blocks of how Bitcoin evolved were discussed. These sections were excellent; describing the main innovations of Bitcoin and how they were woven together to create Bitcoin.

Wallets and mining are introduced and explained. Many different possible attack vectors on bitcoin were discussed. The balance was pretty good here between a technical discussion and a casual discussion. Most parts of the book are accessible to technical and non-technical people.

Legal implications of Bitcoin are discussed in Chapter 7. I thought sections here relied too heavily on news stories and anecdotes.

In the final chapters many different alternative coins and technologies that overlay on the Bitcoin block-chain were introduced. I was pleased to see the innovative altcoins each had something about them including Ethereum. Drawbacks of certain altcoins were discussed but overall the authors did not show any favoritism to certain coins which was nice.

I am giving the book 4-stars though because the writing in certain sections, along with word choice was not well suited for a printed book. For example Chapter 5 was entitled "Bitcoin Mining" and the first sentence of the chapter (p.104) is: "This chapter is all about mining", and the final sentence to the chapter introduction was: "In this chapter, we answer all these questions.". These sentences contain basically no information at all, and I found this pattern repeated throughout the book. In one place a technology was described as "cool".

Overall, the content is a great introduction to crypto-curriences but the authors could use some work on their penmanship.

Stunning Star Shines - Great Book

I couldn't resist turning page after page when I started reading this novel. It is as fast-paced, frenetic, frantic, as the jumpy quick movements of silent film action. To say this book captures the spirit of the silent film era, of the flashing, double-dealing, over handed and underhanded Hollywood of the 1920s and onward, is a disservice. The reader is drawn right in, involved totally with the heroine of the story. The story is about her, but it is also a thorough portrait of the great film Comedian, Harold Lloyd. He comes to life in these pages, a three dimensional fully rounded fictional character. The good, the bad, the surprising, the ugly. He is totally human and his motives and circumstances are clear.
I've read Gunning's two earlier novels, Better than Life, and Mallory. The Glass Character is far more ambitious in its depth and breadth. It is longer, more expansive than the early works. Gunning has presented her master piece, in this novel. She fully comes of age as a serious, yet entertaining writer, who displays a lovely choice of words and a often refreshing turns of phrase.
If you haven't read Gunning yet, start. If her latest novel doesn't win, or at least get nominated for the top literary prizes, there is no justice.
Don't miss an engrossing, absorbing read. By the way, you'll definitely want to hit YouTube to find full length Lloyd films, outtakes, and documentaries.

THOSE WERE THE GOOD OLD DAYS

You're in for a real treat with Margaret Gunning's Novel "The Glass Character"

If you enjoy traveling back to the time when many of our parents frequented silent films as the prime source of entertainment, then you will love to bury your nose in this madcap treatise on the time and personalities of that era.

If the name Harold Lloyd doesn't ring a bell, you will know him intimately by the time you reach the last page.

We know so much about the entertainment industry today, but so little about what went on behind the scenes of the Silent Film era. You will be shocked by Gunning's expose of that wildcap period of our history.

Don't miss this treat from the pen of a very gifted author.

Carpet Ride to Magicland

In case the name doesn't ring a bell, he's the guy with the straw hat and Woody Allen glasses, in the suit, dangling from a clock on the side of a building so far above a busy avenue the cars below look like ladybugs on wheels.

Harold Lloyd.

Movie comedian of the silent 1920s. Called himself the "Glass Character" because his trademark glasses were fake. No glass in them. The guy was a nut. Blew one of his hands to Kingdom Come fiddling with what he thought was a stage prop bomb. It was real. Deliberately gave himself powerful electric shocks to get his hair to stand straight up. Did his own stunts--the clock dangle, the shocked hair, pretending to trip and stagger on building ledges up in the sky, netless--a brave, some would say foolhardy, genius. Nut.

Knowing this and being acrophobic, I can't watch his movies anymore. It even scares me to look at the photos. I'll let Margaret Gunning watch the movies and look at the photos, and I'll read her reports. Well, then again, I don't have to anymore. I've read her book, "The Glass Character". It's all in there.

Margaret, poor girl, is in love with Harold Lloyd. It started out as just a fascination with soundless images. Love snuck up and struck her dumb somewhere amid the exhaustive research she was conducting for a book about what was then still just a fascination. Love. Alas. Margaret is happily married and has two lovely daughters and four darling grandchildren, yet is far too young to leap the gap into the day when her beloved Harold held sway with the girls of a baby Hollywood. Fortunately, for her and for us, she's a novelist. She has the skill to weave the magic carpet to carry her backward in time to those days of yore, those Harold heyday days, and set her gently down along the path the love of her dreams must follow should he wish a rebirth in the imaginations and hearts of admirers forevermore. She's woven that carpet. It's large enough to take us with her on that long strange trip. I rode along on a test flight. We made it back, and I'm still agog.

When we stepped off the carpet in la la land I saw that Margaret had changed. No longer the familiar author of two of my favorite novels--"Better than Life", and "Mallory"--she'd become sixteen-year-old Jane Chorney, a virgin and erstwhile soda jerk in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with a terrible crush on movie idol Harold Lloyd. Soon after we landed, Margaret /Jane (and later "Muriel", as you will learn) decided to pack up her meager belongings, cash in her chips (two cents shy of fifty bucks) and head to Hollywood and into the arms of her eternal love. I might have tried to instill sense in her were I anything more than invisible eyes and ears. Unfortunately I had lost my voice and corporeal substance upon alighting in the Santa Fe dust.

So it was off to Hollywood via a wearying, bumpy bus ride, Margaret/Jane/Muriel full of glitzy dreams and innocence, and me hunkered weightless, mute and unseen on her delicate shoulder.

I won't say more. I took no notes and had to avert my gaze any number of times during moments that really were none of my personal concern. The Glass Character is Margaret/Jane/Muriel's story, not mine. What I did see and hear, and learn during our holiday in history is captured with such lucid, insightful poignancy I can't help but wonder if Margaret didn't in fact remain there, dictating her journal to a holographic image of herself in the distant future tapping on a keyboard somewhere in a place called Coquitlam, B.C.

Author John Vlissides is a member of the so-called Gang of Four: writers of the bestselling and influential Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software, a catalog of 23 design patterns. This more recent book delivers considerable insight on using and applying software design patterns--reusable designs for common programming problems--and compiles the author's further experience with patterns.

Pattern Hatching first defends the patterns movement by offering 10 myths about patterns, which provide a framework for thinking about the role of patterns in today's software. (While not a silver bullet, the author argues for the continued importance of patterns throughout software engineering.) The next section shows how to apply several patterns (drawn from the original 23) in a file system; the author uses and describes common patterns such as the Composite, Visitor, Proxy, and Singleton. A Necessary Book

This slender volume should be required reading for anyone working on an object oriented system (and if you're using C++, you ought to read it three or four times). This book won't so much tell you how to solve particular problems as much as it will help to develop a way of thinking about programming problems that leads to well-design solutions.
The GoF book's second chapter example is unfortunate: virtually every programmer I've recommended Design Patterns to has expressed frustration over the inaccessibility of the primary example of applying patterns in a system.
The file system example in Vlissides, on the other hand, is a lucid and enaging narrative that everyone relates to and seems to gain immediate insight from. I now recommend this book as a requirement for really understanding the GoF book. It's worth the price many times over.

Patterns Demystified

GoF presents everything you need to start with patterns. This one tells how to identify a pattern when it's cooking. It explains in actuality what patterns can and cannot do, what patterns are and are not, how does a pattern come to existence and stuff related to the concept of patterns and not a list of patterns as in GoF.
GoF is if you need to dive into patterns. This one if you need to swim in patterns. Don't expect a list of patterns as in GoF. This is more on how to identify a pattern, how to chose among a set of patterns, when to use, when to invent and etc.
This book will serve best after the pattern hype has washed over you atleast once.

A great follow up to the GoF design patterns book.

This is superb book. I felt it was easy to understand, of course I had already read the GoF book. It has a complete chapter filled with a great case study. It walks your through designing a UNIX style file system. There is nothing bad to say about this book, I recommend it to anyone who wants more after reading the original Design Patterns.
