This book is for those who've been teaching EFL for at least a year - not because of the material being particularly advanced, but because you must encounter the difficulties first to truly appreciate how intelligent & sensitive Paul Nation's approach to teaching is. What actually merits the 5-star rating is how clearly he communicates this approach. While most academics in this publish articles or books laden with academic lingo to hide the fact that they're conveying almost nothing of actual value to the teacher in the trenches, you can open this book to virtually any section where you need help and find something you'll be able to apply to your class the next day.
From the mere fact that he dares to say that teachers need to teach much less because research shows that teaching has little effect and yet provides an overarching plan for how enable students to use English better (in a word, planning) this should be considered a seminal work in the field.

I like this book but it is a little like bait-it gives just enough to tantilise and no more. You need to go to websites/buy other texts to actually get ‘the big picture’. If you are just starting out it is insufficient. For me, a veteran of 25 years who is always looking for new tools for the tool kit, I gained some insight into vocabulary acquisition, for that reason alone it was worth the purchase. It does, however, need a little more depth to actually fufill the promise of the title.

Robert H. Shumway is Professor of Statistics at the University of California, Davis. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and a member of the Inernational Statistical Institute. He won the 1986 American Statistical Association Award for Outstanding Statistical Application and the 1992 Communicable Diseases Center Statistics Award; both awards were for joint papers on time series applications. He is the author of a previous 1988 Prentice-Hall text on applied time series analysis and is currenlty a Departmental Editor for the Journal of Forecasting.
David S. Stoffer is Professor of Statistics at the University of Pittsburgh. He has made seminal contributions to the analysis of categorical time series and won the 1989 American Statistical Association Award for Outstanding Statistical Application in a joint paper analyzing categorical time series arising in infant sleep-state cycling. He is currently an Associate Editor of the Journal of Forecasting and has served as an Associate Editor for the Journal fo the American Statistical Association.

About the Author
Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia.  They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.  They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.  During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory.  When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines.   After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.  Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt .  It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears".  

Over 50 children's books later, Stan and Jan still plan all of their books together -- both write the stories, and both write the pictures.  They live outside of Philadelphia in the country.

Now that I have a child, it's harder to maintain proper Spanish around the household. "The Berenstein's Bears New Baby" Spanish version allowed for a wonderful transition of great, classic American children stories to be told in Spanish, therefore, incorporating the best of both worlds! This is a book to keep on bookshelves that is great to read over and over again. It even helped me practice my Spanish as well!

Handy for the Oncology professional

How am I the only one to review this product???

Pretty good comprehensive guide to Oncological diseases and emergencies. I loved how I can carry this easily in my pocket. I like how each disease is represented within the 2 pages that face each other. The basic points are bulleted. I find the staging, statistics for survival and treatments to be the most helpful.

My only complaint is that some of the abbreviations are not common place. I find myself having to stop and look up the abbreviation before I can read any further. Annoying but not detrimental.

If you're serious about learning heme/onc and want a great reference on the go

I'm a 4th medical student as of now on an heme/onc away rotation at UCLA. If you're serious about learning heme/onc and want a great reference on the go, I would definitely recommend this book to you.

Aside from the practical part of the book (solid/liquid onc and various treatments, and benign heme), one great thing is that there is a large section dedicated to basic science, including immunology, molecular pathways, lab techniques (ie flow cytometry, gene sequencing), epigenetics, etc. This will help give you an idea of what you may need to read more in depth to build your fundamentals as you go forward.

There is also a large section dedicated to pharmacology organized by modality of drug, where you can refer to for side effects and dosing for various drugs. There even is a section on radiation therapy and its various modalities (stereotactic, brachytherapy, etc).

One potential downfall of this book compared to the original pocket medicine is that there seems to be less references. However, the information as far as I can gather is up to date until its publication and will serve you well.

Legendary quick reference ...

In spite the fact that I'm a book-worm-Hem/Onc fellow, I've never wrote a review in my life. What prompted me to do so is the fact that this book is absolutely awesome! Concise, will organized and has what you need to survive your first year of fellowship. If you are an attending, don't feel shy, buy it, and use it. The fact that everything in this book is evidence-based is phenomenon. You can go back to the main publication if you want to know more. I used Pocket Medicine in my residency and I have faith in this series.

Much-loved YA author Patricia Wrede (Dealing with Dragons, Calling on Dragons) retells here the storyline of Episode I, The Phantom Menace from opening shot to final scene. Since much of the action in Phantom Menace centers on 14-year-old Queen Amidala and 9-year-old Jedi-to-be Anakin Skywalker, Wrede takes the opportunity to focus on the thoughts and struggles of these two scrappy youngsters. And young Star Wars fans will appreciate that Wrede's adaptation is faithful to the screenplay--the events and dialogue mesh seamlessly with memories from the movie, only complementing the action with added details and inner dialogue. (We all knew what Anakin was thinking when he rolled his eyes at Qui-Gon's mollycoddling, but this book confirms our suspicions as Anakin groans to himself, "Grown-ups!") An inset section with 28 color stills from the movie adds a nice visual touch to a well-told story. (Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes

Patricia C. Wrede strikes again !

It's amazing how, she started out and finished writing a "CHILDREN'S MIDDLE-GRADE novelization of the new "Star Wars" movie" and it came out better than the "Terry Brooks's "big" adult novelization".
I've been a fan of her work for a while now, she manages to write interesting books, yet keep them simple, where you can't put it down. Perhaps my overall favorites are the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, if you liked this book, be sure to read all of the EFC. Also several reviews mentioned how the battle scenes weren't described too much, well, that's how she writes, going into the story, rather than pointless facts about some 10 digit coded names of ships or droids. Also one mentioned how she didn't use "complex words", a book does not need unneccesory complications to it, will those words make the book better ? more enjoyable to read ? I can't understand these people. The whole point of the book is to enjoy the story, not judge how complex the words are and how much they can be twisted. It all comes to less is more.
Again, this wasn't aimed for general public, middle-grade levels preatty much.
Ohh and by the way, it's Mrs. Wrede.

True to the Movie, With Greater Emotion and Depth

This was a really good summation of the movie, with enough of a look into some of the characters' thoughts to make it enjoyable. Patricia C. Wrede is a great fantasy writer (I adore her novel 'Snow White and Rose Red'), so this doesn't surprise me. She has a great feel for writing beautiful prose that is engaging for children and adults alike.
Obviously Wrede had read, or at least heard about the concept of, the two Jedi Apprentice novels, since she refers to them on pages 4 and 5 of the book. At the beginning Qui-Gon is thinking about Obi-Wan, and how they complement each other, and wondering if that was what Yoda foresaw when he "brought Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan together as Master and Padawan apprentice." (4) We also get this line from Qui-Gon's thoughts: "Obi-Wan Kenobi had great skill, no question of that, but sometimes he was so...intense." (4)
It was the insight into the thoughts of the characters that really sold me on this novel, especially the thoughts of Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Amidala and Anakin. We read of Qui-Gon groaning inwardly at Obi-Wan's "battle humor", and resigning himself to it, remarking that at least Obi-Wan showed evidence of *some* sense of humor, however dark. We discover that Qui-Gon is most disturbed by the power that the handmaiden Padme seems to have over the Queen, and he is rather curt with the individual he views as the "Queen's favorite." We learn of the despair Anakin felt when he realized he has lost everyone who ever meant anything to him.
There's a strange dialog between Padme and Anakin in this book that we don't see in the movie. When he first meets Padme in Watto's junk shop, right after he tells Jar Jar to "Hit the nose!" of the droid, he turns to Padme and calmly states that when he grows up he's going to marry her! Padme is stunned, yet feels a cold chill go through her at the boy's certainty of this.

We learn that after their disagreement over Anakin and the Council upon leaving Corscant, there was a coldness between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan on the journey to Naboo. When he walks up to Qui-Gon in the swamps of Naboo to apologize, Obi-Wan is upset that he and Qui-Gon are about to go into battle with a rift between them. He spent most of his time on the journey to Naboo in the cockpit with Ric Olie and Anakin, and recognizes the boy's talents. He's still wary of Anakin, but sees his master's position. Obi-Wan was angry in the Council Chambers when Qui-Gon announced he wanted to take Anakin as his Padawan. He felt like Qui-Gon was chosing Anakin over him - like an only child becoming jealous of a new baby in the house.
Perhaps the most poignant new information from the novel is that when he is standing behind the force field watching Qui-Gon and Darth Maul fight, Obi-Wan is overcome by the sensation that everything is wrong as a cold chill runs through him. He seems to see the black figure wearing a black helmet, and knows that *he* should be the one fighting him, not Qui-Gon. He tries to shake off the feeling as he watches the battle.
All in all, this novel faithfully relayed the story, and made it more accessable to children, certainly. I found some good insights in it as well. I'd recommend this as a quick reference for the movie. It's not as detailed in dialog as the screenplay, but it certainly tells the story faithfully as a coherent whole, which I don't think you get with the screenplay (Or with the Terry Brooks adult novelization, for that matter).

Informative and highly focused.

When I first received this book, I was disappointed because of its short length (106 pages). I could not have been more wrong, the book is very comprehensive. I bought this book because I was involved in a Private Equity transaction on the entrepreneur side of the transaction. We had received a term sheet from the investor and I needed to get educated about this stage of the transaction. The investor that submitted the term sheet was not using one of the 5 typical formats, so Wilmerding's approach of describing the various clauses in the term sheet and the effects on the parties was of critical importance to our transaction. As the other reviewers have mentioned, the author describes the various clauses as investor favorable, middle of the road, or company favorable. This approach was helpful in developing several ideas for "push backs" in our negotiation. The author also helped highlight "red flags" to be aware of and described their significance. The author also highlights where it is important to retain experienced council to avoid legal pitfalls.
This book is a step by step cookbook for navigating the first critical steps in each round of financing a new company will do. Ignore his advice at your own financial peril.

Fantastic Book-Unparalleled Insight

This is a first rate book-regardless if you are a seasoned venture capitalist or first time entrepreneur. Having been a venture capitalist for 22 years now, the term sheet in this book is boilerplate-but it is 1 of the 4 boilerplate term sheets every legitimate lawyer/venture capitalist uses as a term sheet-and available for the first time ever in the "public domain." In addition, what makes the book so valauble is the line by line wording and analysis for entrepreneur favorable, investor favorable and neutral. I highly recommend this book to every entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and executive of every level-it is a MUST have on your bookshelf as a timeless reference.

Most Insightful Book Ever Written on Venture Capital

I would spend $1,000 for this book - simply put. Even though I am a VC, I was completely awe struck by the detailed information on raising capital, term sheets and valuations this book presented. Besides having great insight into raising venture capital, the highlight of the book is clearly an actual term sheet, put together by one of the leading law firms, with line by line descriptions of what the wording means and actual "legal wording" for "investor favorable," "entrepreneur favorable," and "neutral" terms. This is information you pay $20,000 for with your lawyers. This book is a must have for any entrepreneur, venture capitalist or financial executive.
