Jack M. Sasson, the Mary Jane Werthan Professor of Jewish Studies and Hebrew Bible at Vanderbilt University, lives in Nashville, TN. He is past president of the American Oriental Society and the International Association for Assyriology.

In the best tradition of Anchor Bible Commentaries

Sasson's commentary on the book of Jonah follows in the best tradition of the Anchor Bible commentary series. While Sasson is a leading scholar, he avoids the hypertechnicality that permeates some modern Bible commentaries. Sasson is quite fair to the commentators that have proceeded him. In a lengthy introduction, he reviews the various interpretations given the book of Jonah as, for example, irony, comedy, allegory, parable, etc., giving each approach its due. Sasson also reviews the scholarly arguments over the dating of the book. Sasson comments on each chapter, verse by verse, and does an excellent job of showing themes that run through the book. In addition, relying upon sources from the ancient world, Sasson sheds light on many of the mundane activities described in the book, such as seafaring and travel. As is customary with Anchor Bible commentaries, Sasson includes a lengthy bibliography.
Even if you end up disagreeing with Sasson's own interpretation, you will surely find enlightening his generous approach that includes so many other viewpoints. This is an excellent book for anyone desiring an intensive study of one of the world's best known big fish stories.

Excellent discussion of a misunderstood book

Jonah is perhaps one of the least understood books of the Bible, with most people unable to get by the "whale" (actually, dag gadol, or great fish). The book contains fascination interaction between men and God, which Sasson brings out well.
Not only does Sasson go phrase by phrase through the four-chapter book of Jonah, discussing the book, discussing sources, but he provides us with an excellent translation, and lengthy introduction and postscripts. You'll read about the millenia-old debate as to whether Jonah is historical or not.
Sources from Jewish, Christian, secular, and other traditions are used.
Anyone from beginner to expert will get something out of this book, and it really doesn't matter what religion you are. I have no idea what religion Sasson is a member of. Jews may have a slight advantage in the discussions of Masoretic cantillation, since many learn them in preparation for Bar Mitzvah, but it really isn't necessary for a good understanding of what Sasson is getting at.
A good source for the reference library, or for anyone interested in learning more about the Book of Jonah than the 51 verses in the Bible.

A net full of fish to choose from

This commentary was written with many helpful and informative comments concerning the Ancient Near Eastern history and culture. Many of the things discussed are fairly original. So this is one of those go-to commentaries.

As I was preparing a sermon on it though I had to disagree with Sasson's main unique contribution about why Jonah was angry or depressed. Sasson brings up a great point in that it seems strange that Jonah would want to die if what he was really mad at was that God was compassionate. Sasson offers what he prematurely thinks is the best solution, but I believe it makes things more complicated.

Sasson says that the reason why Jonah is upset is because God did not use him like God normally uses prophets. Jonah was not involved in the process other then as a tool for God's own hidden purposes. Apparently God knew something he was not telling Jonah, and Jonah mad at that and felt useless. The reason Jonah fled in Chapter 1 was because he was scared of possibly getting killed by the Assyrians, and the reason given in Chapter 4 was not the real reason, but an excuse.

The main problem with this theory is that it ignores verse 11 of chapter 4 where God brings up why He is justified in being concerned about Ninevah. If what Sasson sayas is true then God should be addressing Jonah's concern about being a pawn in a divine chess game.

Also it seems just as likely that Jonah was taking seriously what God prophesied through him in 2 Kings 14. God desired Israel to be saved, not completely destroyed, so how else could this happen unless, in Jonah's thinking, Assyria was wiped out. So then Jonah wanting to die makes perfect sense because he would have been the scourge of Israel after leading their bitter enemies to repentance!

Detailed Review of the Short, Magazine Lee-Enfield, but...

This text is a brief review of the development and subsequent marks of the .303 Short, Magazine Lee-Enfiled rifle. It does an excellent job of part nomenclature, general marking reference (for more detail see Skennerton, Broad Arrow), and an Excellent guide to part Identification. All just as the name implies.

However, the text describing the development of the various marks make several references to the Skennerton book, The Lee-Enfield story, but does not even give a simple synopsis of what is stated in that text here. It leaves the reader with a sense of incompleteness, and a feeling that this text is a sort of advertisment for the the Lee-Enfield Story.

If you are looking for a simple list of parts, part names, their general orientation within the whole, and some basic marks and identification this is an excellent series. If, However, you want more then you must either acquire the "for Collectors" series, or better yet Skennerton's The Lee-Enfield Story".

This handbook by Ian D. Skennerton does a great job of identifying the various models of the British .303 cal rifle. Very good parts identification and disasembly drawings. I would definitely recommend this book.

Dave Sterrett has written a highly engaging book examining many of the philosophical fallacies in the abortion debate. The book challenges many of the lies on which abortion is founded and the philosophical assumptions that help to support the destruction of human life. No rock is left uncovered as Sterrett argues against materialism, scientism, relativism and secularism while metaphysics, personhood and natural theology are defended. A restoration of Aristotle’s philosophy would help to form hearts and minds towards protecting the unborn.

He describes how metaphysics is essential to the ethical debate about abortion. Sterrett attacks scientism as a promotion of science for its own sake that leaves no room for any immaterial reality or type of transcendence. He also examines the views of many famous philosophers and celebrities, examining the errors in their thinking. David Boonin comes under particular attack for his lack of professionalism, and Judith Jarvis Thomson, Peter Singer and Richard Dawkins are also critiqued. Boonin still has a picture of his son as an unborn child, yet still is intellectually dubious in his arguments in defence of abortion. The argument defending abortion because we cannot know when life begins is still around today and has led to the death of over 55 million children in the USA alone.

Sterrett is clear that sanctity and natural theology should not be dismissed in the abortion debate just because they are religious terms. Arguments for God along with being and essence are visited. The author highlights that if God does not exist there are no adequate ontological reasons to affirm the existence of objective moral truths.

Sterrett defends the ideas of both Aristotle (whom we have largely forgotten about in the Western world, but had erroneous views on abortion) and Jefferson (whom he defends from the hypocrisy of owning slaves). Aristotle was brilliant in defending natural rights, virtue ethics, substance and human dignity. Aristotle’s idea of substance is still relevant for science today, and all humans should be considered persons. Today the majority of abortion supporters believe strongly in a separation between human beings and personhood. All persons are someone for who they are, and not solely for any functional purpose. Human beings deserve respect for who they are. Human babies are innocent, persons and human and therefore they should be protected and not be intentionally killed.

One of the closing chapters looks at similarities and differences on both sides of the abortion debate. Abortion advocates often use theories, while defenders of life use Aristotelean logic with premises about real life. Despite this, some abortion advocates such as Singer can see that there can be a greater purpose in some suffering, humans are responsible for what they could have prevented, that racism is wrong and that animals should be treated with respect.

A philosopher’s stance on abortion is frequently rooted in their metaphysical beliefs. Defenders of abortion prefer a functional view of what it means to be human, rejecting metaphysics and essence and existence. In this worldview, children are often viewed as inhumane parasites and pregnancy can be viewed negatively. Contemporary abortion advocates have rejected Aristotle’s metaphysics and the scholasticism of the middle ages. Aristotle and Aquinas affirmed epistemological realism and metaphysical realism. These classical truths could help progressive ethicists who are blinded in their own philosophy to be more open minded about the dignity and personhood of unborn human beings.

The book provides a whistle stop tour for many of the most important philosophical arguments surrounding ethical issues, and an engagement where comprehensive philosophical thought can be a foundation stone for the abortion debate.

Excellent guide to metaphysics and abortion

Abortion is always a controversial issue in this country and one aspect of it I find interesting is that the science has often been neglected. We know much more about the science of life than the ancients did back then. Oh they knew the basics fully well. They knew exactly what it took to make a baby, but what exactly was going on in the whole process and when it was that life began was not a question they could answer definitively. For this, we can be grateful to modern science showing us that life does begin at conception.

What the ancients did have an advantage in is metaphysics. The ancients knew less than we do today, but in all honesty, they thought more. Did that mean they were right about everything? Of course not. That would be ridiculous. But it meant they looked at the world around them and looked a lot deeper than just the surface level. Unfortunately, our scientific age has often become so fascinated with the science that we haven’t looked past it to deeper truths.

One such thinker that looked deep in the past was Aristotle and he was a tremendous influence on our civilization and still is. I’d agree with thinkers like Feser that where we went off the bend was when we started moving away from Aristotle. To go to Aristotle also does not mean we jettison modern science. We can still have the metaphysics of Aristotle and still keep modern science, and that metaphysics could help with the abortion debate.

In fact, that’s what Dave Sterrett argues. He argues that our aborting of the thought of Aristotle is causing us to not think properly on the abortion debate and we have to return to metaphysics. Pro-Life organizations have realized this as well, hence a question that you’d get from someone like Greg Koukl or Scott Klusendorf. That would be the question of “What is it?” That is the first question to ask in the abortion debate. What is it we are aborting?

Sterrett argues that a return to the metaphysics of Aristotle can answer that question and throughout the book, there is no doubt that he has done his homework as he profusely quotes the other side throughout. Sterrett will guide you through Aristotelian thought on this issue and help you see how it works out and also expose the fallacies that go on the other side where metaphysics is often ignored. (Indeed, too many in our society think that anything that has to do with metaphysics is automatically bunk.)

Also, this book is fairly short. I read it over Christmas break visiting my in-laws. If you want to get a good book on metaphysical issues that will help you out in the abortion debate, then Sterrett’s book is an excellent one to get, and hopefully you will be one to help us stop the abortion of Aristotle in today’s society. Who knows how much could be improved if the metaphysics of Aristotle were allowed to be reborn today?

You must read this if you are interested in pro-life apologetics

Dave Sterrett has given the world an incredible resource with this work. This book includes a response to the greatest minds that promote abortion. His writing style is both scholarly and accessible. In ten short chapters, the reader will walk away with a deep fountain of information that reaches both the heart and the mind. He provides ample evidence and many arguments that reveal the fallacious reasoning of abortion defenders. I'd encourage every person that wants to seriously be equipped to defend the pro-life position to read this work.
