About the Author
Mary Reckmeyer, Ph.D., is the Executive Director of Gallup’s Donald O. Clifton Child Development Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Under her leadership, the center has received national attention for excellence in early childhood education, workplace contribution and developmental results and has helped thousands of children build their lives around their strengths. The center has served as a model for schools nationwide and as a training center for teacher development and education.

Reckmeyer has been with Gallup for more than 30 years. She has served as an Educational and Strengths-Based Development Consultant and Seminar Leader; studied talent-based interviews of more than 2,000 individuals, including children, teachers and parents; and helped create the Clifton Youth StrengthsExplorer, an assessment designed to identify talent in young people. Reckmeyer also coauthored How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids, based on the #1 New York Times bestseller How Full Is Your Bucket?

Reckmeyer is a former teacher who holds degrees in education and educational psychology. Her research has included youth strengths development, parents of minority achieving students, learning disabilities, educational programming and lifespan development. Great Book (Be Careful With Kindle Edition?)

Content of the book is four-star. Great insights as to the importance of negotiating the interplay between our own talents (as parents) and those of our kids -- which may or (more likely) may not be similar in nature. Downgraded to 3-stars because the book is supposed to include access codes to the Strengthsfinder and StrengthsExplorer on line assessments -- but have had no luck from either Amazon or Gallup in getting those codes for the Kindle edition. Codes were to supposed to be sent via email following purchase, but has been a week without receiving anything and neither company seems to have a solution. Very poor execution.

Update (2016-02-12):
After multiple attempts and ongoing correspondence with Amazon over a 10-day period, their support team was finally able to provide codes for both assessments. Note that I never received the notification with codes that was supposed to be automatically sent after the purchase. It was only after continued requests that they were provided via correspondence with Amazon. Upgraded to 4 stars because I think the content is so good and valuable for both parents and children.

Highly recommend.

Strengths Based Parenting has taught me that parenting is not a "one size fits all" approach. I have 2 children and they are very different from one another. Using the tools in the book, including the Strengths assessments that are included with the book, has truly changed my parenting and quite frankly has made my life as a mother a little easier. Highly recommend.

easy to understand story what is wrong with schools today

Just received this book in the mail yesterday. I flipped straight to Chapter Six: Strengths-Based Schools. It starts with a four page animal parable that explains through a common sense, easy to understand story what is wrong with schools today, and why strengths-based engaged schools is a better answer to all the failed school reforms and teacher accountability efforts. Now if only the local community and school leaders could get an opportunity to read this.

Below is my "elevator speech" on why pursuing engaged schools is a better way to go. I pass it on whenever I get the opportunity.

Why it is important to pursue this -
If one believes our country’s survival is based in part on economic prosperity, and that our future economic prosperity is based on the education of today’s students, then we have a compelling need to help students reach their potential through academic achievement in preparation for a life of achievement.

The problem with our education system is that students have changed.
Our education system was designed at a time when most students came to school externally motivated to learn and achieve. That external motivation is no longer a trait of a large percentage of todays’ students.
Forty years ago the majority of students came to school motivated to learn. This motivation to achieve was provided at home. School discipline was the norm, and it was reinforced at home.

Today’s students are different. A significant percentage, perhaps the majority now, do not come to school with that externally-provided motivation to learn and achieve. Further, the historic school discipline is no longer part of the system. Or it has been severely weakened. The response to slipping student performance is to put more pressure (accountability) on the teachers to improve student performance. Doing so without recognizing the student has changed is just placing more stress on an outmoded education system that can no longer deliver to many of the students. This stress is causing new teachers to abandon their teaching career. Veteran teachers are discouraging young adults from pursue teaching careers. That is quite unbelievable, but we all have direct examples of both. We need to stop accepting that as the norm and see it for what it is - a major wake up call that our education system is disintegrating and we, the community, need to step in and change it. It CAN NOT be changed from within from the bottom up, or even at the principal level. I have been part of three attempts to build engaged schools over the last ten years and all three have failed - one at the principal level, one at the vice principal and teacher team level, and one at the teacher level. The system is too bureaucratic and resistant to change from within. Well meaning, passionate teachers who want to apply the strengths assessment to their homerooms get over run by the requirements of the system. They are working hard to just tread water.

This drop in student achievement is discussed in detail in “Mothers, Leadership, and Success” by Guy Odom. I was introduced to his book in the mid 90s via a book review in the local paper by the then school superintendent.

The solution to educating today’s students is to change the education system to tap into the internal motivation of the student through engaging their talents, rather than continue to assume, in error, that students bring this motivation to achieve to the classroom.
An education psychologist at the Univ of Nebraska, Don Clifton, studied what made great school counselors and professors. He had graduate students conduct research on the question. His many years of research was rolled into a private company to help companies select for talent. Clifton then became CEO of Gallup in the 80s and combined his approach to individual excellence with Gallup’s world class data collection, research and analysis capability. Today much of Gallup’s work is in building engaged customers, building engaged employees, and building engaged students. Disclaimer - I have no association with Gallup.
The foundation of Gallup’s work recognizes that to achieve high levels of success begins with knowing ones’ natural talents, and then leveraging those talents with knowledge and skill to achieve performance strengths. Gallup provides a road map for applying this approach to schools in a book “Building Engaged Schools”. In these schools, each student’s natural talents are identified, affirmed, developed, and used as a basis to explore the field of work and careers. Informational interviewing and job shadowing are a core part of these schools. By starting with their natural talents, students are internally motivated to put forth the effort to explore and develop their talents to achieve. Students graduate with a high degree of confidence in knowing their talents, and knowing what work/career paths maximize use of their talents, and are internally motivated to pursue those chosen work/career paths, leading to high levels of achievement in life.

A serious, scholarly work on the death and aftermath of Tsar Nicholas II and his family

More often than not, when I read a book on the last rulers of Russia, the Romanovs, there's a part of me that tends to react with some disgruntlement. If it is a novel, it's with a a lot of unhappiness at times; lately there seems to be quite a few novels that pursue the very unlikely possibility that someone survived the Ekaterinburg massacre.

But scholar Wendy Slater has delved into what has actually remained from that time, using the autobiographical accounts from the executioners, various rumors and wild stories, the works of writers, and the bones themselves. But what makes this different from most of the works on the Romanovs that are available is that it remains a dispassionate work, looking at what there is, and refusing to give in to the temptation to romanticize the story.

Cruel Neccesity
Slater pieces together the various stories from the accounts that the guards in the Ipatiev house gave to both the White armies that took Ekaterinburg a few days after the massacre, and those who survived the Revolution. The account is slightly fictionalized to preserve a narrative flow, but she is careful not to add or subtract anything. What emerges is a story that both answers questions and evokes a chilling finality. This is not a timid story, and the violence quoitent is quite high, so not for the highly sensitive.

True Crime
The story now moves to the late 1970's, and when several people got together, and decided to figure out what really happened. They put together what clues they had, tramped out into the woods, and started digging -- and found three skulls and some bones. They kept their secret for a while, made castings, and then quietly returned the bones to their resting place. It was after all, the time of the Soviets, and not quite the time to state that grave of the last tsar of Russia and his family had been found. But a few years later, politics had changed, and an offical team along with the original discoverers were brought in, and this time the entire grave was opened and the bones removed to figure out what had happened. How the remains were identified, and a mystery that is still unfolding, are the topics of this chapter, along with some heavy scholarly infighting.

The many deaths of Nicholas II
Slater discusses some of her reasons for writing this book, now that she has the two major sets of clues in hand. Instead of just merely going after 'what really happened,' she takes the more interesting route of how the past is interpeted and seen. Many of the stories here I had never heard of before, and it was an entirely new angle of historical research.

Gothic horror
One of the more wild stories that roamed through the Soviet Union was that the head of Nicholas II (and sometimes that of the Empress as well) were taken to Moscow for the delectation of Communist leaders before being destroyed. Besides these rather lurid accounts, there are also the questions of why the Tsar and his entire family and remaining servants were so brutally murdered. Some say that it was a ritualized killing, but the truth is far more ordinary -- it was common practice for both the Communists and the Whites to 'dispose' of any political prisoners before they left a city.

False Alexeis
With the offical acknowledgement of the grave, the story of there being survivors among the Tsar's children got a new lease on life. Several accounts of how Alexei and one of his sisters had survived the massacre, rescued by those still loyal to a tsarist Russia, were published, and the mystery of where two of the bodies are is still fueling fictional potboilers. Besides being wildly improvable, Slater goes into some deeper thoughts as to why these myths persist; I suspect that there is a deeply seated need in the human psyche that when we hear of some dreadful tragedy that somehow, we hope that someone has managed to survive, despite all of the logic to the contrary. As of this writing, a major earthquake has struck the country of Peru, and in the mountains of Utah, they're looking for trapped coal miners -- even in the face of desperate odds, we still hope that someone is alive. And the images of Nicholas II's children, all between the ages of 13 and 22 at the time of their murder, stir a feeling of dispair -- how could any one murder children, and if people are capable of that, then what does that say about humanity?

Tsar Martyr
Nicholas II and his family were deeply religious, and so given their piety and the massacre, it's hardly surprising that they've become venerated as saints, and were offically canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church. Along with some images of the icons that have been created, Slater includes several stories about how these images just might be creating miracles.

Family Portraits
Lastly, Slater looks at the uses of photography of the Imperial family, and how it was used during the reign of Nicholas II, and afterwards. Unlike the formal, stiff photography that most monarchies used to depict an image of strength, power and tradition, Nicholas II also wasn't shy about how he used a sentimental streak of human nature, showing himself, his wife, and their children as images of cozy domestication. In some of the letters that have survived, he and Alexandra discuss how this or that photo may make a suitable postcard, to raise funds for charity, or to inspire loyalty. Of course, the use of photography to manipulate public sentiment is still a viable tradition today.

Conclusion: Miscalculating History
Slater sums up her ideas in this brief chapter, and helps to make the rather murky stories and myths that we have about the last tsar and his family a bit more clear.

Along with these essays, there is an introduction, extensive footnotes, bibliography and sources, and an index to pinpoint just what you're looking for. The pictures that are included are rather grainy and in black and white; only a few of them were new to me.

I have to say that this is one of the better scholarly works on the Romanovs that I've seen in the past years. Slater comes down rather heavily on the more romanticized, especially gushing, tributes that have been published in the last few years. To be honest, this book needed to be written, if only to put some of the more outlandish ideas to rest, once and for all -- although that is rather doubtful.

Slater's writing is careful, meticulous and thorough. While this is certainly not light reading, and I would not recommend it for anyone but those who take their history seriously, it is one of the better books out there at the moment on Tsarist Russia. Just make certain that you have something a bit lighter to read after you get finished with this, as the subject matter is extremely depressing.

A Comprehensive Look at the Romanov Murders

This book was a bit pricey considering it isn't very long and only contains a few pictures, but it was a pretty decent read. It explores not only the death of Nicholas and his family, but the conspiracy theories that abounded after the murders. Slater makes an interesting point in her conclusion, which emphasizes Nicholas's role as a martyr. Unlike Charles I of England and Louis XVI of France who were tried and executed publicly in the midst of Revolution, Nicholas was secretly shot in the middle of nowhere, there was no evidence of the executions other than the safely guarded testimony of participants, and their remains were not found for decades, leaving vast speculation amongst Russian people and portraying the Bolsheviks in a negative light.

This is a heavy piece of history but contains great sources and a unique perspective. I recommend to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the brutality that took place in Soviet Russia in 1918.

Clearly outlined and detailed accounting of the last Tasr and his family, the preceeding politics, the horrible deaths, the extraordinary 'cover up,' investigation, revalations, and candid appraisals and conclusions. This is the best overall study of this turbulent period in world history that I have read.

A bitter sweet coverage of more or less advanced Python topics.

Any expert Python programmer knows that the selection of books covering advanced topics is quite limited. With its rosy title, Pro Python, whose second edition recently hit the shelves, definitely targets that reduced group of customers. Keeping these few people well fed is not as easy as it may seem. Simply talking about stuff that starts with a double underscore is not enough. Not at all. In this small list of advanced reads, this title stands in the middle: it gives the reader some good gem, but most of the time he will feel like it just another text covering basics concepts.

As just stated, the title suggests Pro Python should feed the reader’s hunger for advanced topics, those that, once you mastered, make you stand out. I must say that I feel like I have been served only an appetizer. While on the one hand the book certainly has some very positive note, on the other there are flaws that greatly lower its overall value, mainly readability.

But let’s start with the bright side. What I have enjoyed most of the book is, by far, the choice of the author to cover, step by step, the Zen of Python. While the interpretation is certainly subjective, I appreciate both his ideas and the choice itself to discuss it. I don’t remember any other title dedicating all that time and words to the subject. Similarly, I have been positively surprised by the chapter dedicated to software licenses, something any programmer should be aware of.

Speaking of more technical material, I think the author gives his best when he discusses multiple inheritance and how, internally, Python resolves it through the MRO. That dedicated to decorators also stands out among others. Here Marty gives details that other texts, such as Effective Python, do not. The real value for the developer comes by combining the information from these different sources, thus getting an even better view of the whole topic.

So, let’s slowly move to what I reckon being deficiencies of this title. First, while the chapters aforementioned do indeed deliver good value to the avid reader, I must admit that the examples that come with the theory are often very spartan, reduced to very few lines.

Most of the subjects covered are not advanced. The chapter dedicated to strings, for example, doesn’t go deep enough and, just like all the last chapters, is very short. Too short. The same is true for garbage collection, just to mention another.

The weakest point of the whole title in instead readability. I think that the there is not a real flow that takes the reader from one concept to another, smoothly. On the contrary, he often finds himself thrown to a very different subject abruptly.

Overall the book is not bad, but there are definitely better alternatives for those seeking advanced knowledge.

Effective Python: 59 Specific Ways to Write Better Python: this title certainly covers more expert topics that Pro Python does. Still, the two titles are somehow complementary and the reader can benefit combining them.
Learning Python Design Patterns: a very good book completely dedicated to design patterns, a subject each programmer must know.

More For an Advanced Beginner than a "Pro"

Despite the "Pro" in the title, I don't believe that's really the target audience for this book. I've been a software developer for over 15 years with a heavy modern Perl background and I recently started using Python. I have been looking for a resource for experienced programmers that already know the importance of fundamental programming concepts and just want a better understanding of how to do these things in idiomatic Python. This is not that book. This is a great resource for people who have just gotten comfortable writing small programs that work but haven't had much experience with software development. For advanced software developers, the overall topic coverage is fairly high level with some important deep level details being brushed over. I also found that the overall flow of the book wasn't as conceptually cohesive as it could have been, it felt like the author was jumping around a lot in each chapter. For beginning programmers, the author does take his time laying things out and building on concepts, leading to more a more idiomatic Python approach. For experienced programmers, it's painfully slow and I just found myself skimming through most of the chapters looking for the useful bits. I'd say I only found maybe 20% of the content in the book to be really useful. Definitely not a good value for me. That being said, I plan to recommend this book to beginning Python programmers because I think it has a lot to offer to the right audience. I just wish the author would follow through with some of his ideas a bit better and think about what "story" he intends each chapter to tell.

Wonderful continuation of this fantastic middle grade fantasy adventure graphic novel series.

This is the seventh book in the Amulet series and it feels like it has been taking absolutely forever for these to release. It’s been pretty much two years between each book for the last couple books in this series. That being said this was an incredible addition to the Firelight series. Last I read Kibuishi has ten books planned for this series. This is a series that both me and my nine year old son adore; so it’s a fantasy graphic novel series that is great for middle grade and older readers.

Our characters are split into two parties throughout the story. The vast majority of this book is spent with Emily and Trellis as they visit Algos Island and find out some very startling things about the history of the Amulet Keepers. This part of the story was fantastic. We learn a lot about the Amulet Keepers history and also get some backstory on the accident that killed Emily’s father. We also get some excellent backstory on Trellis and how he was raised.

The other part of the story follows Navin as he (along with the rest of his crew) try to evade the Elves, rejoin the rest of the Rebellion and reunite with his mother. This part was pretty brief but it was good to see what Navin was up to.

The illustration is absolutely spectacular with full color and breathtaking backgrounds. I continue to really really love the illustration style in these books.

The story doesn’t make a ton of progress but some interesting twists are revealed and there is one huge “Oh No!” Moment towards the of the story that will keep readers hooked.

Overall a fantastic addition to the Amulet series, if a long time coming. Wonderful characters, some good progress on the story, and beautiful illustration. I really look forward to and enjoy reading the books in this series. I do wish there was a “the story thus far” at the beginning because it is so long between book releases. I also wish that the story moved a bit faster. However, this is an incredibly well done series and I highly recommend to fantasy graphic novel fans of all ages.

Drop everything and read this series!!!

I recently got into this series last year and I love it!!!!!!!! Kudos to the people who have been reading this series since the first one was published in 2008. I can't imagine waiting that long. The series gets better with each volume in my opinion. It takes me about an hour to read one, so worth it. The worst part is the waiting but totally worth it!!!!

Wonderful series!

our son that recently turned 10 got one of the Amulet books at the library and was instantly HOOKED! he could not get enough of the series. we are slowly ordering the entire set and he will read cover to cover in ONE DAY!
excellent books! great for the imagination.

Worth the read

I'm a theatre major and have been reading book after book trying to improve and expand my technique. I came across this book and thought I'd give it a try. This book is one of the most helpful I've come across so far. The only downfall is that his methods can seem a bit vague at times, but he does make up for it with further explination. Over all, I'd recommend this to anybody wanting to improve their improv.
