Very inspiring

I love reading Steve Backlund's books. They are easy reads that get right to the point. He is a master at inspiring faith, hope and joy and really strengthens my resolve to rise above poor belief systems that can hinder me so I can actively embrace superior truths of my victorious connection with Christ. His words always encourage my ability to become stronger, happier, more confident, and more successful in everything I do.

I had been believing lies that actually empowered the liar to dwell in my life. The message Steve spoke brought truth and freedom. I purchased a book of his there,and it was awesome.

About the Author
Ken Bruen (b. 1951) is one of the most prominent Irish crime writers of the last two decades. Born in Galway, he began writing in the mid 1990s. He has two long-running series: one starring a disgraced former policeman named Jack Taylor, the other a London police detective named Inspector Brant. Praised for their sharp insight into the darker side of today’s prosperous Ireland, Bruen’s novels are marked by grim atmosphere and clipped prose. Among the best known are his White Trilogy (1998–2000) and The Guards (2001), the Shamus award–winning first novel in the Jack Taylor series. Along with his wife and daughter, Bruen lives and works in Galway.

Difficult, but a real treasure

This second volume of the Laws of the Icelanders has now become available nearly a quarter of a century after Volume I appeared. Sadly, that first volume has now gone out print, although from taking with the publisher, I understand a new edition of Volume I will soon be ready.

Great news, because together these are tremendously important documents. They not only give wonderful insights into the medieval world, but also hold the seeds of much of English law that in turn would find its way into the quirky American legal system. If you believe legalistic thinking is a kind of insanity that often goes against common sense, you'll find lots of proof in these "Viking" laws, that seem to cover every possible worry of medieval man -- how a whale is to be divided, the punishment for composing unflattering poems, the fine for kissing someone else's wife, how murder is to be reported, and so forth. Eighty-year-olds slipping off and marrying without the permission of their kids was apparently a big enough problem that a special set of laws had to be made to cover that situation. There was one fine for a poke in the nose, another for a kick in the testicles.

Being a collection of laws, however, they're not easy reading and probably will need to be taken in small doses of a page or two at a time and thought about -- much like Donne's poetry, say. Many of the laws require some real untangling to be understood at all, while the meaning of others has likely been lost forever.

Just the same, the translators have done a super job of making the laws accessible. They've grouped them logically and provide plenty of footnotes for assistance, along with a dictionary of technical terms and a glossary with the original Icelandic vocabulary.

Obviously these are scholarly works meant for a specialized audience, but that audience should certainly extend to everyone in the legal profession and everyone with an interest in the Middle Ages, especially those who would hope to fully understand the Icelandic Sagas. Actually, anyone who likes to read should enjoy skimming these volumes. Even if you can't afford to own them yourself, you should encourage your local library to have them. They are priceless.

A treasure trove of interesting information

Like all legal codes, this is not an easy read. This is made all the more difficult by the attempts to leave some of the technical vocabulary intact in the manuscript. One often has to get the sense of how everything fits together to understand a given regulation (for example, the idea that one can have meadowland rights on someone else's property). At the same time, of course, leaving this technical side intact makes the book more useful.

This being said the book is an amazing treasure-trove of information. There are sections in this volume which deal with dog bites, tame polar bears, divorce, remarriage, and torts involving interfering with a marriage. The Icelanders had some sense of something like community property though it was not evenly divided (2/3rds of the community property belonged to the husband).

Moreover the sense of legal protections for vulnerable persons was very different in this system. For example, an individual has a right to search for stolen property on the land or in the houses of others with a band of up to 30 men, none of whom are free to refuse to help, but a search area must be contiguous, so all farms in between two suspects must also be searched. This seems to help reducing abuse by inconveniencing those who are legally required to render judgement (clearing verdicts done by a panel of five neighbors). Similarly, upon getting married, a man had to pay a "bride-price" to his bride, and if they divorced, she was entitled to keep this money. This was her money and not part of the community property.

Understanding how different societies solved social problems is immensely interesting in its own right but it is also important. By looking to how other cultures looked at issues, we are better prepared to look at the problems in our own time with a new set of eyes. This can be of help in understanding the social diseases of our day.

About the Author
Mariale M. Hardiman is assistant dean of Urban School Partnerships at Johns Hopkins University. Teacher Friendly Book for Putting Brain Research Into Practice

Importantly, author and Johns Hopkins graduate, Mariale Hardiman, comes from two points of view having served as both a K-12 educator and college faculty. Hardiman's primary goal to inform educational practice shows in her practical model that synthesizes research on the brain and learning into an approach that can be used in the classroom.

In the chapter on important themes in brain research, Hardiman states that just as the potential for learning continues throughout the lifespan, `research also tells us that effective instruction not only increases memory and learning but also produces neurobiological changes in the brain.' Teachers who read this book can use the Brain-Targeted Teaching Model to improve instruction. The model is also appropriate for use by school leaders, professional developers, and instructional mentors who want to improve teaching practice through their work with groups of educators.

In the author's words `The model does not propose new methods of teaching. Rather, it synthesizes a number of elements related to research-based effective teaching and connects each one to what neuroscience reveals about how the brain learns.' The Brain-Targeted Teaching Model describes and discusses six stages within the learning and teaching process: emotional climate, physical learning environment, design of the learning experience, how to teach declarative and procedural knowledge, teaching for extension and application of knowledge, and evaluating learning.

This book, originally published in 2003, includes a brief section about the brain that might be updated to include more research that has been published since. Nevertheless, it is a valuable resource for those who desire to keep up with important work in this expanding field.

Dr. Hardiman provides a model which can be used by every classroom teacher in organizing the wealth of information being published to improve instructional techniques. While aimed at brain research, the model can include differentiated instruction as well as other techniques.

The book provides six categories in which to place all relevant notes and information. These six categories serve as the conduit between research and application. The last chapters provide a large number of learning units which have been "field tested" as well as information on school improvement planning.

With the continued transition of classroom instruction into a science as well as an art, this is a must read!

Jennifer Riley, a street-smart Chicago reporter, is tracking a story of the deaths of six prominent cancer researchers, all on the brink of a major breakthrough for several forms of cancer. Enter Mike Daniels, Marine in Desert Storm, a CIA operative in planning the Basra Shiite rebellion against Saddam Hussein, which, because the Americans pulled out and did not provide the back-up promised, caused the slaughter of tens of thousands of Shiites in Basra.

Now, years later, Daniels, still with a mind full of anger and betrayal, is a member of the U.S. Anti-Terrorism Task Force, and he's tracking what he's sure is an American cell of terrorism, though he can't get a handle on who makes up the cell or what such a network plans to gain by conducting acts of terror against its own country.

At this point Daniels and Riley collide--he wanting her to get out of the picture, for fear she'll tip off suspects in his much broader case, and she convinced there's a huge story on preventing cancer cures that needs to be exposed.

They suddenly realize, however, that they've become targets of very determined assassins--actually the Cell itself, now aware that between them, Mike and Jennifer have enough information to at least briefly complicate their multi-trillion-dollar power plan.

After nearly being murdered in Chicago, Mike and Jennifer head into the North Woods of Wisconsin, unaware of the satellite and computer-equipped black Lexis not far behind. The satellite fix leads the Cell assassins straight to their location, but, because of Jennifer's knowledge of the area and Mike's marksmanship with the various guns they've accumulated, they escape once more.

They now confront two issues: Can they reach a rendezvous point with Pete Dillard, a former Marine helicopter pilot whose life Mike saved in Desert Storm? Dillard, now a U.S. Senator, flying his own plane, would take their materials back to Washington, immediately make them public and open hearings. Also, before they are assassinated themselves, can Mike and Jennifer figure out exactly who is behind this well-financed, high-tech, lethally professional operation determined to destroy America.

Metaphor and mystery

Roger Whitlow provides more than a story of intrigue and conspiracies if one chooses to dig deeper. In the white hot, sultry scenes of sex and violence, he metaphorically situates the story in ancient themes of greed and desire. We are led to the mysteries of the brutality of sex and the orgasmic nature of violence as the characters work out their individual struggles from old, festering wounds that tug at tired lives. The quest for both personal and institutional power permeates the landscape Whitlow so boldly offers. He doesn't merely tell a story; he provides the reader with a bodily experience, invoking all the senses and plunging the reader into an intricate web of conspiracies, jealous cravings, emotional turmoil, harsh memories, hot sexual encounters, and vicious physical violence. The pace is fast, the pulse is deep and hard, the story raw and courageous. I encourage those who might typically not read novels or suspense stories to try this on. Whitlow surprises the reader at every bend.

Fast-paced thriller/mystery that keeps you guessing

The American Cell is a real page-turner due to the fast pacing and compelling storyline. There's something for everyone: shadow conspiracies, political intrigue, sexy characters, action-packed shoot-outs, interesting medical science, and a mystery that keeps you guessing until the end. The author weaves in subtle, evocative details that you really immerse you in the world of the characters. Great for your next air travel.

Woke up this morning determined to get something accomplished and instead read this book because I could not put it down! Awesome story telling, full of fact, fiction and romance. I cannot wait for the next book, these two main characters are complex and will lead to more wonderful reading! Write faster Roger, I need to know what happens next!!! joverstreet
